Distinguished and Famous people from Boort

Near Boort, a farm workshop became a sculpture destination, while a lakeside collection has helped visitors engage with local Aboriginal history. These are distinctive contributions rooted in work carried out in the district.

🔧 John Piccoli

John Piccoli, widely known as the “Spanner Man”, transformed used tools into large sculptures on his family farm near Boort. After contracting polio as a child, he farmed from a wheelchair before turning to sculpture in retirement. He and his wife Sonia welcomed visitors to the resulting sculpture garden, where familiar workshop objects became animals and other elaborate forms. His death in 2021 prompted tributes from the community and admirers of his work. Few artists gave the humble spanner quite such an ambitious second career.

🏺 Paul Haw

Boort resident Paul Haw has maintained the Yung Balug Temporary Keeping Place on his property on the eastern side of Lake Boort. Loddon Shire's lake masterplan records its collection of Yung Balug artefacts and its role as a destination for visitors interested in the area's cultural heritage. Haw also appeared before a Victorian parliamentary committee in 2023, identifying himself as the owner of the lakeside museum. His contribution is the practical work of maintaining and explaining a local collection; the cultural heritage it records belongs to the area's First Nations people.

🏫 Frank Rogan

Frank Rogan joined the staff of Boort Higher Elementary School in 1936, while pursuing university study part time. War service interrupted that education, and he later returned to teaching before moving into municipal administration. Appointed Maryborough’s town clerk in 1948 and Melbourne’s in 1955, he became an influential advocate for professional local government and urban planning. Boort belongs to his actual teaching career, before markets, infrastructure finance and council reform took over his working life. The school appointment records the educator behind an administrator whose later concerns included better training for people entering local-government service.
